ANATOMY

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland which is located below the vocal cords and is responsible for production of hormones which is carried by blood to all the tissues of the body. It has three main functions:

- Firstly the regulation of body metabolism i.e., conversion of fat or food into energy.

- Secondly, conservation of body heat.

- Thirdly maintaining the health of other organs of the body by hormones.

The thyroid gland may develop some abnormalities like excessive production of the hormones or any swelling or cysts and nodules. The thyroid surgery includes partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland. The Cost of Total Thyroid Removal varies from place to place, so consider all options before choosing one.

REASONS FOR THYROID SURGERY

The prime reason for thyroid surgery is the presence of nodules or tumors which can be benign or malignant. Hyperthyroidism is another condition which requires surgical intervention as it starts
overproducing of the hormone. Another reason for thyroid surgery is enlargement of this gland, known as Goiter. It blocks the way used for breathing, eating and speaking.

PROCEDURE

The procedure begins with the pre-hospitalization of the patient where the subject is not allowed to eat or drink after midnight if the surgery is planned the next day. The patient is taken to the operation theatre where he/she is given anaesthesia according to the doctor's choice and the process is performed. An incision is given in the neck area and the thyroid gland is removed partially or wholly depending upon the disease. It takes two to four hours for the procedure to complete.

TYPES OF THYROID SURGERY

Before delving into details about surgical options available, it is very helpful to check the
Cost of Total Thyroid Removal, now lets read into the types of surgeries one can opt for.
1. Lobectomy: In some cases, only part of the thyroid gland is affected which is removed and the second part remains intact for healthy functions of the body.
2. Subtotal Lobectomy: It is performed in patients who suffer from hypothyroidism a condition where there is an insufficient production of hormones. The whole thyroid gland is removed leaving a small amount of thyroid tissue so as to preserve the function.
3. Total Lobectomy: In this case, the whole thyroid gland is removed as it suffers from nodules, or tumours or any cancerous conditions.

RECOVERY

After the surgery, the patient is advised to take rest and avoid strenuous activities for at least ten days depending upon the healing conditions of the gland. There is a feeling of soreness in the throat and pain is followed by discomfort. The pain can be overcome by painkillers and sedatives. Sometimes, after the surgery, you may develop Hypothyroidism which can be adjusted by giving levothyroxine tablets to normalize the body metabolism.

RISKS DURING THE SURGERY

There are some risks involved while performing the surgery. They are either excessive bleeding or allergic reactions after injecting of anaesthesia.
